WELCOME
to our website for multilingual neuro-speech and language therapy!
Multilingualism has increased significantly in recent years as a result of migration, internationalization and political conflicts (Ceuleers et al., 2015).
Due to the increased number of multilinguals and the increase in the incidence of acquired brain injury (Eulderink, 2004), there is a real chance of multilingual individuals suffering from aphasia. This is also referred to as polyglot or bilingual aphasia.
When multilingual speakers develop aphasia, it affects any language a person speaks.
The incidence of polyglot aphasia in America is estimated at 45,000 per year and although no incidence or prevalence numbers can yet be found for Belgium or Europe, it can be stated that polyglot aphasia occurs more and more frequently (Ansaldo et al. 2008; Verreyt et al., 2015) and there is a need for clear guidelines regarding diagnosis and treatment (Verreyt et al., 2015).
Through this website, we are therefore trying to make a concrete contribution to this!
